Forward into the Past:
The Consemble – a 21st Century Venue for Intermediate Level Classical Piano Works

Imagine your intermediate- to advanced-level students performing a standard repertoire piece along with an orchestra – a digital piano orchestra – comprised of their piano playing peers! Sampled sounds of the state-of-the-art digital piano provide a compelling setting, enabling our students to enjoy and even embrace historically significant piano music. Various musicianship skills, which are rarely addressed, will be explored such as performing with a live orchestra, dynamically shaping a phrase together, following a conductor, and experiencing the magic of playing in an orchestral setting.

See Me Sing!: Technology Tools for the Voice Studio

The Italian bel canto masters were right! Now we can not only hear but see why. This session will examine the use of various recording methods and sound analysis programs in the voice studio, correlating what we as teachers traditionally listen for with what now can be seen. Dr. Allen will demonstrate ways such programs can enhance learning for us and our X-Box generation students. No Physics degree required! Helpful hints and sources of reasonably-priced and free software will be provided.

All private instrument teachers including vocal, instrumental, string and piano will benefit from examining existing curriculums and standards. This interactive session will examine what we as private teachers can do to embrace standardizing our students musical education.

This lecture recital will include the performance of “note-for-note” transcriptions of selections recorded by Oscar Peterson, Bill Evans, and George Shearing. The life and compositional characteristics/style of each composer will be discussed and then followed by performances of their works.

Teaching Music with the Brain in Mind: What Recent Neurological Research Reveals about Learning

There is currently an abundance of exciting research regarding the inner workings of the brain during human learning. Dr. Cash will present some recent findings that have implications for music learning. She will discuss how results may validate the use of common teaching practices and also encourage music teachers to rethink existing pedagogical techniques.

How Firm (Yet Flexible!) a Foundation: Building Healthy Technique from the Ground Up

Technically speaking, beginners can get away with murder while playing in pentascale and extended pentascale positions. Many run aground when moving into early intermediate repertoire. This session explores how to teach keyboard mobility (e.g. the “flexible” foundation) from the very beginning.

Performance Anxiety in the Developing Pianist: A Study and Panel Discussion

San Antonio area high school students share their insights about performing under pressure in a panel discussion. Students will talk about their mental and emotional preparation before competitions and recitals. Parents, teachers and other students are encouraged to attend and share in the discussion.

From AMB to WTC: Basics of Contrapuntal Playing on the Keyboard

Polyphonic music of the Baroque era is one of the most important areas of a serious keyboard student’s repertory. How can a student progress smoothly and logically from the beginning stages to mastery of contrapuntal playing? Exercises and repertoire from the early years of study all the way to the masterworks of J.S. Bach will be presented, with suggestions for avoiding common pitfalls and discouragement with students.

Past TMTA competition winner and scholarship recipient, Mr. Schneider gives a performance of virtuosic romantic piano repertoire as well as several of his own works for piano solo. He discusses what his experiences growing up as a TMTA Student Affiliate member have meant to his career as a performing artist.

Teaching Strategies for the Special Needs Student in the Private Studio

This interactive presentation will give detailed, specific strategies, performances of, and teaching demonstrations with children and adults with special needs. Also included will be hand-outs that include recommended materials for use with special needs students. Parents of students will be available for Q & A session following the presentation.

A New Kind of Listening: Twentieth-Century Compositions for the Elementary-Level Student
