Up

Students who have finished high school may still participate in some Student Affiliate activities.  Post-12 is defined differently for the following areas:
1. Ensemble defines Post-12 as a music student of any age, not engaged in the profession of teaching or performing.
See the Ensemble section of the handbook for further instructions.
2. Original Composition defines Post-12 as not having reached age 27 by entry deadline. See the Original Composition section of the handbook for further instructions.
3. Performance Competition defines Post-12 (Young Artist) as not having reached the age of 27 by the date of the state competition. See Performance Guidelines below for more information.
4. Publication defines Post-12 as not having reached the age of 27 by the entry deadline. See the Publication section of the handbook for further instructions.

MTNA/TMTA Competitions

The MTNA Performance Competitions, consisting of three levels: State, Division, and National, exist to provide educational experiences for students and teachers and to recognize exceptionally talented young artists and their teachers in their pursuit of musical excellence. The state competitions are considered the primary educational level with the division and national levels showcasing outstanding performance and honoring significant pedagogical achievement. 


Application must be submitted online. Detailed descriptions of the requirements and all forms and fee information are available on the MTNA website at http://www.mtna.org.

 

Texas winners perform with an Orchestra at TMTA June Convention.

Fees:
Junior

•  Age: 11–14 as of January 1

•  Entry Fee: $70

Senior

•  Age: 15–18 as of January 1

•  Entry Fee: $100

Young Artist

•  Age: 19–26 as of January 1

•  Entry Fee: $100

Chamber

•  Entry Fee: $100 for each ensemble.

•  The average age of ensemble members

   must be 18–26 as of January 1

  

Composition

The purpose of the composition competition sponsored by Music Teachers National Association is to encourage creativity and self-expression in student musicians through the art of composing and to recognize their achievements, as well as the significant work of their teachers.

Registration Deadline: All applications must be entered online by September deadline posted online at www.mtna.org and copies mailed to the MTNA/TMTA Chair along with the scores. Carefully review the information online at mtna.org or in the April/May issue of the AMT magazine.

 
Fees
Elementary:

•               Age: 5–10 as of January 1

•               Entry Fee:$30 

 

Junior:

•               Age: 11–14 as of January 1

•               Entry Fee: $40

 

Senior:

•               Age: 15–18 as of January 1

•               Entry Fee: $50

 

Young Artist:

•               Age: 19–26 as of January 1

•               Entry fee: $60 

MTNA/TMTA Awards Funded by Texas Music Teachers Educational Foundation

 

PERFORMANCE

These awards are named to honor exemplary dedication to the purposes and ideals of TMTA, and to recognize meaningful and committed long-time service to TMTA, its members and its students.  Awards will be presented at the State Convention in June.

 

The Arthur H. Feese Prize  is awarded to the Junior High State Winner                 $200.00

The Donald E. Johnson Prize is awarded to the High School State Winner           $200.00

The Jo Ann Dunn Fargason Prize is awarded to the Collegiate State Winner       $200.00

The Thelma Hearn Prize is awarded to the Collegiate Chamber Music Winner   $300.00

               

Division Contest Solo Winners will receive $100.00

Division Contest Chamber Music winners will receive $150.00

 

COMPOSITION

State Winners will receive the following awards:

 

Elementary              First Place:              $ 75.00                                                   

Junior High              First Place:              $125.00  

 

High School             First Place:              $175.00  

 

Collegiate                 First Place:              $250.00  

 

Division Winners will receive $100.00

 


Performance Guidelines 

Young Artist is defined as post-high school student who has not reached age 27 by the date of the state contest. 

Entrants must study with a Student Affiliate teacher.  If studying with more than one teacher, the principal teacher must be a Student Affiliate Teacher.
                                   -OR-
Entrant may be a member of a collegiate student chapter and both his teacher and the TMTA member chapter sponsor must sign his application.

First place winners may not re-enter the same state category in future years.

Eligibility to enter the state contest is established if:  Student is a winner of the Local SA Contest in the chosen category 
                                    -OR-             
Student is declared capable by a competent judge if there is no contest
                                    -OR-
 Student of unaffiliated TMTA teachers who has made application to enter students to the Performance Coordinator by
January 1.

REPERTOIRE and MUSIC 

Repertoire is left to discretion of teacher.   

Piano solo programs must be 15 minutes minimum and include more than one style and period of music.  Piano Concerto entrants present an entire work written for Piano and Orchestra. 

Vocal songs should not be of popular or musical comedy origin.  Vocal repertoire must include one song each in English, French, German and Italian, plus one aria from opera or oratorio.  

Orchestral Instruments and Classical Guitar programs should include more than one style and period of music.  

Organ compositions should be of contrasting period and style.

 All repertoire must be memorized except for Organ contestants.

 All music, including cadenzas, must be published and copyrighted.   Vocal embellishments need not be copyrighted.   

Contestants must bring original copies of music to the Contest.

 Contestants are responsible for providing accompanists, if required, at all levels of competition.

 CONTEST TIME FRAME

 Vocal – no limit – judges will hear three or more songs

 Orch. Instrument/Guitar, Organ and Piano solos – not less than 15 minutes, nor more than 25 minutes.  Programs less that 15 minutes will be disqualified, more than 25 will be stopped but not disqualified. 

All Concerto contestants must be prepared to play a complete work written for their instrument and Orchestra.  

Music must be performed in its entirety except for lengthy orchestral tuttis.

PPLICATIONS 

Entrants must use the Young Artist Application form. Send to Local Association Performance Chairman. 

Contact the President of the Local Association to get date of the local Contest and name of the Chairman.  Contact information for local association presidents is listed on the TMTA website and in the Texas Music Teacher magazine. 

 Local winners are expected to represent their associations in the state contests. 

 First and second place piano, vocal and orchestral instrument/guitar winners in the Young Artist category will perform on the Winners concert at the State Convention and receive their cash awards.   Awards are forfeited if student does not perform.

 Location of the organ contest will dictate whether or not there will be a winner’s performance.

 AWARDS

 The “Janice K. Hodges” Awards for Young Artists are:
         First place       $500 and plaque
         Second place   $400 and plaque
         Third place      $300 and plaque 

Winners Recitals are open to the public.
