Composition The purpose of the composition competition sponsored by Music Teachers National Association is to encourage creativity and self-expression in student musicians through the art of composing and to recognize their achievements, as well as the significant work of their teachers.

PERFORMANCE These awards are named to honor exemplary dedication to the purposes and ideals of TMTA, and to recognize meaningful and committed long-time service to TMTA, its members and its students. Awards will be presented at the State Convention in June.
The Arthur H. Feese Prize is awarded to the Junior High State Winner $200.00 The Donald E. Johnson Prize is awarded to the High School State Winner $200.00 The Jo Ann Dunn Fargason Prize is awarded to the Collegiate State Winner $200.00 The Thelma Hearn Prize is awarded to the Collegiate Chamber Music Winner $300.00
Division Contest Solo Winners will receive $100.00 Division Contest Chamber Music winners will receive $150.00
COMPOSITION State Winners will receive the following awards:
Elementary First Place: $ 75.00 Junior High First Place: $125.00

Performance Guidelines Young Artist is defined as post-high school student who has not reached age 27 by the date of the state contest.
Entrants must study with a
Student Affiliate teacher. If studying with more than one teacher, the
principal teacher must be a Student Affiliate Teacher. First place winners may not re-enter the same state category in future years.
Eligibility to enter the state contest is established if: Student is a winner of
the Local SA Contest in the chosen category
CONTEST
CATEGORIES REPERTOIRE and MUSIC Repertoire is left to discretion of teacher. Piano solo programs must be 15 minutes minimum and include more than one style and period of music. Piano Concerto entrants present an entire work written for Piano and Orchestra. Vocal songs should not be of popular or musical comedy origin. Vocal repertoire must include one song each in English, French, German and Italian, plus one aria from opera or oratorio. Orchestral Instruments and Classical Guitar programs should include more than one style and period of music. Organ compositions should be of contrasting period and style. All repertoire must be memorized except for Organ contestants. All music, including cadenzas, must be published and copyrighted. Vocal embellishments need not be copyrighted. Contestants must bring original copies of music to the Contest. Contestants are responsible for providing accompanists, if required, at all levels of competition. CONTEST TIME FRAME Vocal no limit judges will hear three or more songs Orch. Instrument/Guitar, Organ and Piano solos not less than 15 minutes, nor more than 25 minutes. Programs less that 15 minutes will be disqualified, more than 25 will be stopped but not disqualified. All Concerto contestants must be prepared to play a complete work written for their instrument and Orchestra.
Music must be performed in
its entirety except for lengthy orchestral tuttis. Entrants must use the Young Artist Application form. Send to Local Association Performance Chairman. Contact the President of the Local Association to get date of the local Contest and name of the Chairman. Contact information for local association presidents is listed on the TMTA website and in the Texas Music Teacher magazine. Local winners are expected to represent their associations in the state contests. First and second place piano, vocal and orchestral instrument/guitar winners in the Young Artist category will perform on the Winners concert at the State Convention and receive their cash awards. Awards are forfeited if student does not perform. Location of the organ contest will dictate whether or not there will be a winners performance. AWARDS
