STUDENT AFFILIATE MEMBERSHIP Deadline

October 1 to have dues paid without additional penalty. State dues are $7.00 if paid by October 1, and $8.00 after that date.  Check with your local Student Affiliate Chair for local fees which are added to these amounts.

Eligibility

1.  Students in grades 1 through Post-12 may participate in Student Affiliate activities if they are studying with a teacher who is a member of the Texas Music Teachers Association and Music Teachers National Association.

2.   Membership of both teachers and Student Affiliates must be in good standing with dues paid.

3.   Non-member teachers may pay a fee of $100.00 to enter one or more students in competition.

4.   Primary membership must be designated at the time of registration for the current year.

5.   Student membership is counted only once for state purposes and is listed with the primary association.

6.   Students are not required to take the theory test in more than one local association.

Classifications

1.   TMTA-SA Grades 1-12: Students who are in school grades 1-12 and studying with a TMTA
      member.

2.  TMTA-SA Post-12: A high school graduate, high school graduate equivalent, or collegiate student. A Post-12 student must be studying with a TMTA member or be a member of a collegiate chapter. Students should review the age requirements in this handbook for each activity.

3.  TMTA-SA/MTNA Collegiate: Persons who are full-time college students and members of an affiliated association or who are members of an organized, chartered and affiliated student chapter. Student chapters must have a sponsor or advisor who is an active member of TMTA and MTNA. TMTA-SA Collegiate student members are entitled to attend programs of the association upon payment of the registration fee and to receive the official association publication, but shall not have the right to vote, hold office, apply for national certification or enter students into TMTA-SA or MTNA. For competitions, collegiate students should review the age requirements of each activity in this handbook.

Types of Membership

1.       Primary

  1. Piano only: A piano student shall hold primary membership with the local association of his piano teacher. The student shall pay state and local dues, take the Whitlock theory test, and be counted for state enrollment totals in this association.
  2. Multiple instruments: If a student studies more than one instrument and plans to participate in the Piano Performance Contest or play piano in an ensemble, her primary membership is with the association of her piano teacher. The student shall pay state and local dues, take the Whitlock theory test, and be counted for state enrollment totals in the local association through which she holds primary membership.
  3. Organ, vocal or instrumental only: Organ, vocal, and instrumental students not studying piano shall hold primary membership in the local association of their organ, voice, or instrumental teacher. These students shall pay state and local dues, take the appropriate theory test, and be counted for state enrollment totals in that local association.

2.      Dual

a. A student may hold membership in more than one local association.
 

  1. Participation in state activities, with the exception of assisting members of an ensemble, must be through the local association in which he holds primary membership, which is decided at the time of registration for the current year.

c.  Students studying only one instrument may hold dual memberships only at the local level.

3.      Secondary

a.  Piano students who wish to compete in other performance categories may hold secondary
      membership through the local association of their voice, organ, or instrumental teacher.

b.  Students shall pay only local dues, and are not required to take an additional theory test in the
     area of their secondary membership.

c.  Students may compete in Student Affiliate performance contests on both local and state levels, but are not counted in their secondary association.

Dues

1.  The annual state dues are $7.00 for each student, grades 1-12 and Post-12, if paid to local SA prior to October 1, and $8.00 after that date. Many associations add a local SA fee to these amounts; check with your local Student Affiliate Chair.

2.   MTNA/TMTA-SA members shall pay both MTNA and TMTA/SA collegiate dues. MTNA collegiate dues are $12.00.

3.   No memberships will be accepted after March 31.

4.   Any student who participates in a SA event prior to enrolling as a SA member, will be considered delinquent and shall pay $15.00. Participation will not be validated until fee is received. This is not the same as late registration. In addition, teachers whose students participate in an activity without paying SA membership fee shall be assessed a fine of $50.00 in addition to the processing fee. If the fine is not paid, participation will not be validated for any activity.

Registration

1.  Students entering any Student Affiliate events must be registered Student Affiliate members.

2.  Registration forms for new teachers are available online. Each local association SA chairman will receive their teachers’ re-enrollment forms in the mail.

3.  The completed forms and a single check payable to TMTA from the local association are to be submitted to the TMTA office by the local SA chairman.

4.  Students are enrolled according to school grade level.

5.  In the case of home-school students or pilot-school programs, teachers must declare an enrollment grade level at the time of registration.

6.  Any change of student grade level within the year must be reported to the local SA chairman and the TMTA office.

TMTA-SA Post-12

1.  Post-12 students should be included on each teacher's SA membership registration form unless they are members of a collegiate student chapter.

2.  If Post-12 students are members of a collegiate student chapter, the SA membership registration form is to be prepared by the chapter sponsor.

MTNA Collegiate/TMTA-SA Collegiate

1.  College chapters may be formed through MTNA. See www.mtna.org for information.

2.  The SA membership registration form is to be prepared by the chapter sponsor.

3.  MTNA registration is through the national office.
