TMTA Graduating High School Awards 1. Whitlock Memorial Scholarship Award a. This award is named in honor of Dr. E. Clyde Whitlock, a charter member of TMTA and a distinguished music educator and critic. b. Points are awarded according to achievement level in various activities in grades 9-12: TMTA Theory, World of Music, Composition, Publication, Performance contests, as well as TMTA/MTNA Student Composition and Performance Competitions. c. Any graduating high school senior who has accumulated at least one hundred points through achievement in Student Affiliate and MTNA activities during grades 9-12 may apply for this award. 2. Student Affiliate State Participation Award a. This award recognizes the dedicated students whose commitment to concentrated and progressive effort in music study is demonstrated by their participation in TMTA-Student Affiliate activities. b. A student earns one point for participation in each of the TMTA-Student Affiliate activities annually. The activities include the following: Theory, Ensemble, Performance, World of Music, Chamber Music, Original Composition, Publication, TMTA convention student activities, as well as TMTA/MTNA Student Composition and Performance Competitions. c. Any graduating high school senior who has accumulated at least twenty points by participating in Student Affiliate and MTNA activities during grades 1-12 may apply for this award. Eligibility 1. Any graduating high school senior may apply for either or both awards if he has accumulated the minimum number of points for each award. a. Whitlock Memorial Scholarship Award - minimum of 100 points during four years of high school. No more than four years will be counted. b. SA State Participation Award - minimum of 20 points towards participation in SA activities grades 1-12. Accumulation of points is limited to 12 years of school. 2. Applicant should be the student of a TMTA member in good standing. 3. No one student may receive both awards, though qualified students should apply for both awards. Those students who qualify for top prizes in both categories will receive the award with the highest monetary value. Application Procedures 1. Click here for more information. Use of each form is mandatory. 2. Please enclose a 2"w x 3"h picture of the student along with a signed release form. Pictures are not returned. Please write the student’s name, association, and teacher on the back of the picture. 3. The local association is responsible for verifying the number of points claimed. The local SA chair must sign each application form. 4. A stamped, self-addressed postcard should be enclosed to confirm receipt of the application by the coordinator. Awards 1. Whitlock Memorial Scholarship Award First place $200.00 plus $1.00 per point earned and plaque Second place $100.00 plus $1.00 per point earned Third place $ 50.00 plus $0.75 per point earned 2. Student Affiliate State Participation Award First place $300.00 and plaque Second place $250.00 Third place $200.00 3. Honorable Mention Prizes for each Award a. A $50.00 cash award is given to any student eligible for either award who does not receive first, second or third place. b. The student receives only one $50.00 cash award even if she has achieved the minimum points for both awards. 4. Certificates are also awarded to all students who earn the required minimum points for either or both awards. 5. Recipients of the top three and honorable mention prizes of each award are recognized at the state convention in June and their names are included in the awards section of the convention program book. Additional Awards The Elizabeth Morris Ensemble Scholarship consisting of $200.00 will be presented to any Student Affiliate who is a graduating senior and has participated in ensembles for 12 years. This award is in addition to the 12-year award. Post-12 students are not eligible for the Elizabeth Morris Ensemble Scholarship. Senior Theory Awards 1. Because of her efforts in organizing the TMTA-SA theory program, the award for earning gold medals in grades 4-12 is named in honor of Mrs. Jimmie Mansfield. The Mansfield Gold Medal Theory Award, consisting of an engraved plaque and a cash award of $200.00, will be presented to any graduating senior earning gold medals for the theory tests from Levels 4 - 12. 2. Because of her deep affection and years of work in developing the TMTA-SA theory program into the outstanding activity we have today, the award for students earning gold medals in grades 1-12 is named in honor of Mary Loving. The Loving-Mansfield Gold Medal Theory Award, consisting of an engraved plaque and a cash award of $300.00 will be presented to any graduating senior earning gold medals for the theory tests from Level 1 through 12. 3. A Twelve-Year Plaque will be presented to any graduating senior earning a medal on all twelve levels of the theory tests. 4. A Twelve-Year Participation Plaque will be awarded to any graduating senior taking and passing all twelve levels of the theory test. 5. A Six-Year Award consisting of an engraved plaque and a cash award of $50.00 will be presented to any graduating senior vocalist or instrumentalist earning a Vocal or Instrumental medal on Whitlock Levels 6, 8, 9 and 10 plus a gold medal for Whitlock Levels 11 and 12. 6. Application forms for these awards are found in the SA packet on the web-site. Include a 2”w x 3”h picture of the student and a signed photo release form with the application. Send application, photo and form to the coordinator.

World of Music Awards a. The Janet McGaughey World of Music Award is awarded to a graduating senior earning medals in grades 4-12. This award is named in honor of Janet McGaughey because of her interest in providing students with a complete musical education. The World of Music was developed with her encouragement and support. The award consists of an engraved plaque and $200.00 b. The Carolyn Jones Campbell World of Music Award is awarded to a graduating senior for earning medals in grades 1-12. This award is named in honor of Carolyn Jones Campbell because of her pioneering efforts in developing the World of Music program, her authorship of grades 1-3 syllabi, and her dedicated support. This award is given in addition to the McGaughey World of Music Award and consists of an engraved plaque and $100.00. c. A Twelve-Year Participation Award is presented to any graduating senior taking and passing all twelve grades of the World of Music test. The award consists of an engraved plaque. d. Application forms for these awards should be sent to the coordinator by May 1. e. Send a 2” x 3” picture of the student with the application and a signed release form. Write the student’s name, association, and teacher on the back of the picture. Pictures are not returned.
Collegiate Scholarship Award 1. A $2000.00 scholarship for a college junior or senior is available for points accrued through Post-12 activities. 2. Applications are available here or from the TMTA office and are returned to the designated TMTEF Trustee by May 1. 3. The TMTA teacher or collegiate sponsor must also sign the application form. |
