Convention Activities
In addition to Student Affiliate activities at the convention, Texas music students have the opportunity to participate in the following activities at the Texas State Music Teacher Association Convention. Activities are for students of all ages, levels of accomplishment and instruments, including vocalists.
All Star Festival
The TMTA All Star Festival is a non-competitive TMTA performance event in which students who have earned a top rating in a local festival may perform for a rating.
Chamber Music Clinic
This event encourages participation in small group ensembles. A workshop, recital, and other performance opportunities will be available for participants at the state convention. Complete chamber groups or individual students may register.
Convention Projects
The TMTA Convention Projects was made possible by a matching grant received in 2005 from the Music Teachers National Association Foundation Fund.
Topics from Student Affiliate World of Music or Student Affiliate Publication Contest may be used for Convention Projects.
June Leondar Ensemble Music Contest
1. There are three categories for the Ensemble Music Contest:
a. piano duo/duets (classical)
b. duo and mixed chamber groups (classical)
c. jazz/pop ensembles
2. Each category above has two age divisions. For students not in these age groups, all must enter the higher age category.
a. Grades 7-9
b. Grades 10-12
3. Music ensembles shall be no less than two performers, and no more than fifteen.
4. Music ensembles shall be submitted directly from local associations to the state contest. It is imperative that their performances exhibit high standards and are worthy of presentation at the state level.
5. Only two pianos (acoustic) will be provided.
Guitar Workshop
This event consists of a clinic in which select students (by audition) perform for an experienced clinician in a master class format. All students participate in a collegiate-style workshop under the tutelage of the clinician for group instruction in general technical and musical improvement.
Keyboard Orchestra Reading Session
The TMTA Keyboard Orchestra is a non-competitive instruction and participation activity that features groups playing ensembles using many sounds and rhythms available on digital instruments.
