President's Note

Despite the wonderful Texas weather this time of year (?), this is usually an upbeat time of renewal and starting over - kids beginning lessons again, local associations planning their exciting programs for the year, and people finishing relaxing and fun-filled vacations. But not so much this year. Even so, I’m hoping we can find ways to recapture the exciting mood of this season. Maybe we can rethink the things we do only because we have always done them that way. CHANGE CAN MEAN IMPROVEMENT! Investigating different ways of teaching can let us find new resources we haven’t tried, refinements of old methods, and even realize that we might need to just eliminate tactics that weren’t working so well. I know this old dog has been learning some new tricks lately!
Many of you have had a really hard time keeping up your studios with a reduced teaching load. But TMTA needs everyone to renew their membership as soon as possible. All this uncertainty makes this seem less important, and in one sense it is, but your renewal emphasizes your commitment to this organization, and allows us to better plan for this next year. TMTA presently has about 600 fewer teacher members than last year. The deadline has been extended for the MTNA memberships, but if we are going to have to survive with such a large drop in membership, TMTA needs to know that and plan appropriately. Thank you for sending in your fees as soon as you can. That will be a great help to TMTA.
Take care and be safe,
Dr. Roy Wylie, NCTM
TMTA President

Meet the new Vice President for Business Activities-Elect

Julie Arras, Vice President for Business Activities-Elect

Welcome to another year of TMTA! We are so blessed to have such a strong music teachers' association! Thanks to the support of our teachers, we have a healthy, stable working organization that truly offers a wealth of programs for both our teachers and our students.
As the Vice President of Business Activities- Elect, I will be shadowing the very capable Spring Seals this year to learn all about our financial activities. Having already worked on the 2020-2021 budget, I can tell this is going to be a very large job!! I look forward to working with you and helping out wherever I can. Best wishes for a successful teaching year!

Officers Meet to Plan Next Year’s Programs

Believing that the situation will improve during the fall, the TMTA Officers met for their annual planning meeting and worked on program changes necessitated by the pandemic. Thanks to great preplanning, they finished in record time! The biggest items discussed were next year’s TMTEF and TMTA budgets. These and other items from the Student Affiliate Committee and the Trustees, will be presented at the next Board meeting for final approval. As you might expect, this was an online meeting this year.

Plano MTA Ensemble in performance of Paradis “Can Can!”

Thanks to Teresa Crawford, NCTM for sending in this video of an ensemble when they were preparing for convention this summer. Although there was no convention to attend, they wanted to get together somehow and make a recording for Susan Paradis to hear her composition. What a fun, energetic piece and performance!

It is with great sadness we inform you of the untimely death of TMTA member, Carol Sharp.  She passed away suddenly in her home on July 26, 2020.  Here is a link to her obituary.
