September 1, 2019 Newsletter
Dear TMTA Members,
The TMTA Executive Board Members met on August 24 at the Houston Hyatt Regency to discuss a variety of topics that pertained to TMTA. I am so grateful for each member of the board. Every single person brings something to the table with their presence, opinions, and ideas. I want to personally thank them for their service to our organization. I am so proud to be part of one of the strongest state associations within the MTNA family. TMTA is thriving because of all the members who donate their time to all the activities we sponsor for our teachers and students.
Musically, Teresa Crawford, NCTM
The 2019-2020 TMTA Handbook is now available.
Find a Teacher Directory on TMTA Website
All teachers who are members of TMTA are part of the Find a Teacher Directory on the TMTA Website. Beginning September 3, if you do not want to have your email or phone number published on the website, you will need to “opt out.” This can be done by going to your profile and unchecking the boxes underneath your phone number and email.
Call for Sessions
Roy Wylie, President-Elect
Would you like to present at the 2020 TMTA State Convention? We are presently issuing the call for session proposals and would love to have you submit yours. Just complete the online Session Proposal Form by October 31, 2019.
The theme for this year’s convention is “…Into the Future with TMTA” and will focus on innovative teaching methods, technology and new careers in music. Proposals for sessions discussing new pedagogical ideas and publications, careers in music, and other innovative aspects of the music profession will be most highly considered. But we hope to have a wide variety of topics and performances for our attendees as well, including some for parents and students, plus a few sessions on non-piano related topics.
Hsinyi Wang, NCTM, Certification Director
It was quite an experience to attend this year’s TMTA Convention as the Certification Director. There were SIX newly certified NCTM teachers this year. Congratulations to all their effort and achievement! This year’s grand prize for a FULL NCTM application fee reimbursement went to Joanna Reeder. Houston MTA and Austin MTA tied for producing the most new NCTM teachers. Good job! While we wrap up this year’s convention, let’s welcome our newest NCTM, Li-wei (Joyce) Liu from Plano MTA. Congratulations and now you have the chance to win back your application fee! (See you in the 2020 pinning ceremony next June in Houston!)
Li-wei (Joyce) Liu, NCTM 2019 (Plano MTA)
Joyce currently is a certified Suzuki piano teacher and a certified teacher of Royal Conservatory Certification. The designation "NCTM" demonstrates her deeper dedication and commitment to the professional level as a piano teacher as well as the musical success of her students.
Best of State
Dino Mulic, Chair
Deadline is September 30! The Best of State Award highlights the accomplishments of TMTA local associations. Local presidents must submit an online application and summarize your innovative projects, creative programming ideas, or exciting music-making programs. The winner will be selected by a three-member panel and the award will be presented at the 2020 June Convention in Houston. For more information, click here.
Do you have TMTA Expense Reimbursements?
If you still need to be reimbursed for TMTA expenses, then please submit an Expense Form as soon as possible and include all relevant receipts. This applies mainly to TMTA Committee Chairs, SA Coordinators and Chairs, Theory graders, World of Music graders, and officers. I would like to get all Expense Forms submitted as soon as possible, and by September 10 at the latest. Expense Forms for 2018-2019 which are submitted AFTER September 30, 2019 will not be reimbursed. Questions can be sent directly to Spring Seals, NCTM.
