|How to Build a Thriving Local Association
by Spring Seals, NCTM
Data from national membership surveys shows that members who had a mentor when joining MTNA are two times more likely to be involved in leadership roles! If you want to train-up new members in your association to be able to take over leadership positions, make sure they get connected with a mentor. A mentor can help guide new members through the student activities and professional development resources offered through the local and state associations.
Cypress Creek Music Teachers Association (CCMTA) is looking forward to celebrating its 40th year in 2019. CCMTA started in 1979 with Pat Wickey as their first President. Their membership consists of about 35 teachers, with options for three different levels of membership. CCMTA is very active in TMTA Student Affiliate and they have many local activities including: Fall Festival, Spring Festival, Piano Duo/Concerto Contest, Young Artist Competition, Dr. Fred and Wanda Pauling Piano Competition, and CCMTA Piano Contest. Additional activities include a summer music camp scholarship (CCMTA Memorial Summer Camp Scholarship) and the Don H. Harris Activity Award Scholarship in which students have the opportunity to earn cash awards. A yearly grant is given to an uprising student studying music therapy. Senior awards are given to graduating students who have participated in CCMTA events in grades 7-12, and one CCMTA Scholarship is given to a music major or minor entering college. One of their newest projects is the Jean Sallee Giving Library in which they have re-homed approximately 500 books of music to music teachers and students in the last two years. They are a friendly group who believe in supporting each other with encouragement and programs.
